Number of children who use social networks like Facebook increases, and they are not always aware of the risks when they reveal private information about themselves, warned the European Commission.

"There are more and more children on social networking sites, but many of them do not take all measures to protect themselves," said Commissioner in charge for new technology. According to a survey of 25 000 young people from 25 European countries, whose results were published in Brussels, 38 percent of children between 9 and 12 has a profile on some social network on the Internet. When it comes to children aged between 13 and 16 years that number is growing even to 77 percent.

A quarter of them said that their profile is "public", that personal information is available to anyone, and that, sometimes, is possible to find them through an ordinary search engine. Every fifth of them reveals home address or phone number. The younger the children the dangers of abuse are bigger, has warned the European Commission.

While 78 percent of youth between age of 15 and 16 say that they know how to protect their private information, but it is not the same case by half of those between age of 11 and 12 years. "These kids put themselves in a situation that could harm them, because (at that age) they are very sensitive," said European Commissioner.

She called on all social networks to immediately implement changes in registration process of juveniles so they would not be available to those which children have not marked as "friends". Some Social Networks have signed document that obliges them to take measures to protect minors. The European Commission, however, states that "some social networks which are popular among young people have not signed the document," and the Commission will announce the revision of the document.
