At the annual convention of the American Psychological Association, researchers have presented a plenary study that shows effect of social networks. "No one can deny that Facebook has changed form of social interaction, especially among young people, and now, we are able to see a solid psychological research that shows positive and negative effects," said one psychology professor.

The researchers found that teens that are using Facebook more often show narcissistic tendencies. Young people who spend lot of time on Facebook show more other signs of psychological disorders, including antisocial behavior, mania and aggressive tendencies. They also pointed out that Facebook is distracting and can negatively impact learning. Students who visit Facebook at least once in 15 minutes during lectures achieve lower grades. Excessive daytime use of Facebook can have a negative impact on children's health. They can become more prone to suffer from anxiety, depression and other psychological problems.

On the other hand, scientists have found that young people who spend more time on Facebook show better "virtual empathy" with their online friends. Also, online social networks can help introvert children to learn how to socialize. The researchers also say that social networking may provide funds for teaching in a way that can be interesting for young students.

However, researchers say that parents should not secretly monitor the activities of their children online. "You need to start talking about the use of appropriate technology early and often, and in this way to build trust so that when there is a problem your child will talk to you about it."
